TAMAATSI AT DOWNTOWN TULUM
In the Wixárika cosmovision, many spirit deities have existed on this planet long before humanity.
These deities worked together to coordinate a divine plan to propitiate life and make it accessible to us.
The pieces in this collection of artwork were done by native artists from Tuapurie (better known
as Santa Catarina Cuexcomatitlán), one of the three largest Wixárika communities that still prevail.
Tuapurie is in the northern range of the state of
Jalisco. All the pieces were made in each of the
artist´s homes.

Sacred Symbology
One of these great spirits, our big brother, Tamaatsi, is responsible for bringing the wisdom to comprehend
nature´s essence and function. Tamaatsi has a deer-like quality known as Maxa, which is the bridge that
connects the Wixáritari to all other deities. Together, through rituals and ceremonies, these deities seek to
perpetuate life and its balance. Tamaatsi is the one who guides the Wixáritari toward ancestral wisdom, the
comprehension of existence, and communion with nature.
